I believe that there are many aspects that contribute to the use of technology within education. Teachers and students use technology in the classroom for a variety of reasons such as communication and ways to interact and learn with and through others in the digital world. Being able to collaborate through the use of technology has opened up a world of new possibilities as well. Technology is becoming a major part of our world and teachers and students will continue to be influenced to implement technology within their classroom to allow communication to extend beyond the classroom itself.
In regards to ISTE and the standards that they set, I believe that setting these standards and supporting the use of technology through education is a great service to educators. By setting standards to regulate and guide the use of technology it allows for a better chance to strive towards positive technological skills and knowledge within the education systems. Out of the seven student standards that provide a layout to better help students succeed when it comes to technology, the most meaningful to me is the empowered learner and digital citizen because I personally relate to those two. I am able to understand new technology and use it to my advantage and learn to improve on emerging technologies. I also believe that understanding one's rights and responsibilities with the use of technology is a major priority in ensuring everything is positive and safe. One standard in particular that I would say is outside my current skill set is innovative designer. While technology is a growing aspect of the world around me, I still have trouble understanding and accessing all of the new technologies that are becoming available to me and using them to my advantage. It is very complicated to me and does not come easy for me to learn.
A “digital native” relates to younger generations and their relationship with technology. To be a “digital native” means how one relates to technology and the amount of knowledge and understanding they have towards it. I lean towards disagreement with the term “digital native” because I believe there are many factors that constitute an individual's relationship with technology. It doesn't matter the age or generation of an individual, what matters is how one personally relates to technology depending on a variety of factors such as immersion. It depends how immersed one was or is in the technological culture. I have seen differences between the use of technology by students and teachers especially in High School. Towards the end of my High School years, teachers were asking a lot more of students to use technology like computers to complete assignments at home which was always a struggle for me because I grew up with no computer or laptop in my house. I didn't think it was fair to rely so heavily on technology to complete assignments but I understood that it was part of our world now. In my future, I anticipate that my students will know a lot more about the use of technology than I do and I will be constantly learning from them. While I might have trouble using technology, I am always open to better my knowledge on it.
Collaboration is a major influencer for using technology in the classroom. Students can work together, even when they aren't in the same room!
ReplyDeleteI think you make a fair point for digital natives being more related to the individual's relationship to technology! In my experience it has never really been older generations being more involved but I guess all our experiences are different, just as you didn't really grow up with a computer at home. For my family it was a necessity, but we only had one that stayed in my dad's office.
ReplyDeleteYes, as you said, all our experiences are different! And that is what I believe creates a "digital native" or "digital immigrant."
DeleteYour personal experience in the implementation of technology in classrooms is very insightful. I like how you can show that the term "digital native" isn't something that can apply to every person born after a certain date. Also, your explanation of why the ISTE standards you chose are important was very well thought out.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Implementation of technology in the classroom is something we will never get away from these days so I believe it is very important to take advantage of the resources we have.
